The Mandalorian's season 3 story is revolving arouf the mandlorian symbol of leadership, the darksaber. The Saber has ben in several Star Wars shows, such as the Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, and the Book of Boba Fett. Though many think the saber is a symbol of leadership, it's actually a symbol of civil war and destruction. Darth maul, Sabine Wren, Bo-Katan, Moff Gideo--they all had it wrong.

Alright, the Mandalorian chapter 22 ends with Bo-Katan Kryze earning the darksaber and efficiently becoming the new leader of her people.

This outcome is kinda confusing and goes against the rules that the show established about this space Excalibur.

Din won the blade from Moff Gideon in the previous season, but he couldn’t give it to Bo-Katan because according to the rules, the darksaber can only be won in combat.

But Din and Bo didn’t duel for the blade, and yet she now wields it thanks to a very convenient loophole.

Doug: I don’t get the rules at all

Yeah, you and most of the internet.

So we’re gonna explain the darksaber’s rules and why Bo-Katan can wield it now.

But more importantly, we need to talk about the curse of the darksaber, and how this blade has forced the Mandalorians into an endless cycle of war and destruction.

And why Din giving the blade away, might actually be a very good thing.

At the end of chapter 22, after Din and Bo-Katan finish their little side quest, they finally arrive to recruit Bo’s format army. A faction that is now led by Axe Woves.

They turned on Bo after she failed to retrieve the darksaber in the previous season.

Bo-Katan challenges Axe to a duel for the right to lead the army. Now while she wins, Axe and the others don’t really want to follow her because Din has the darksaber. And they don’t like Din’s kind of people.

But then Din finds a loophole that allows Bo to receive the darksaber without fighting him.

Doug: Yeah I still don’t get it

So the creed states that whoever wields the darksaber can rule all Mandalorians. And that’s because of ancient religious tenets that this society believes in, to a fanatical degree.

At the end of season 1, Moff Gideon had the blade, despite the fact he isn’t a Mandalorian. He nuked Mandalore during the purge and somehow won the blade from Bo-Katan.

Then in season 2, Din won the darksaber from Gideon in a duel.

Din wanted to give the blade to Bo-Katan, but then Gideon explained the rules.

But now Din found a loophole around it.

In chapter 18, he was ambushed and defeated by the spider droid-thingy. Which is still one of the coolest designs in Star Wars in my opinion.

He lost the darksaber to the spider-droid, technically, and then Bo-Katan saved him ad killed the droid. So this means that Bo-Katan won the blade in combat, technically.

Which means that for a minute there, Mandalore was ruled by a spider droid.

This is why Din can give her the saber, because she already won it, on a technicality.

Essentially, it’s elder wand rules.

So basically, Din just carried the darksaber around for a while without any actual purpose until it was time to give it to Bo.
Doug: I still don’t get it

Ok so to explain how these rules work, let’s go back to the very beginning.

The darksaber was created a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla. The first Mandalorian Jedi.

After his death, the saber was kept in the Jedi temple. But house Vizsla stole it and since then the darksaber became a symbol of power among the Mandalorians.

I always found it ironic that the Mandalorians give the darksaber so much importance despite its connection to the Jedi.

The Mandalorians and the Jedi are ancient enemies, and still, the darksaber became a symbol of power in their culture.

Now while there are no supernatural forces to the blade, it serves as a conduit to the wielder’s thoughts and actions. As explained in Rebels.

This is why the darksaber is so heavy for Din, it’s as if the blade senses his hesitation to wield it.

Anyway, at some point, the Mandalorians began believing that anyone who wins the darksaber in combat becomes the ruler of Mandalore.

And this brings me to why the darksaber is a curse for the Mandalorians.
