Finally finished! This song is so beautiful, but the lyrics are really poetic so it was difficult to translate them. I hope I didn't distort or lose too much of their meaning in the process. :( It's a really beautiful (and sad) song though. I'm open to any discussion about the meaning or interpretation of the lyrics. :D And this will probably be the last upload in a while, since school is going to become really busy again. But I was able to upload March Rain on the last day of March! /;;
The video I used is the newer PV by omu, but the audio track is the original version. Some others (such as pineapple's gorgeous retuned version) might be technically better and nicer to listen to, but I feel that this one is somehow more emotional.
Translation notes:
0:36 Literally "smoke flowers," this can mean "fireworks," but in this context it's a metaphor for a sexual relationship. I didn't know how to make it sound pretty though, so I just left it as flowers.
1:51 I wasn't sure how to phrase this without being overly verbose, but what this line means is that before they were fated to be together, and in this fated relationship, they had really deep feelings for each other ("detailed," i.e. a lot of feelings about every single thing about the other? It's kind of like One Direction's "Little Things";;;)
2:08 Instead of just being confused, it should have more of a meaning of being infatuated and spellbound.
2:14 The beautiful scenes are "such a pity" because no matter how beautiful they are, they're all empty to me because you're not here.
2:21 I can't translate poetry. D: I tried to make it rhyme and sound kind of poetic, but I don't know how that turned out haha. If anyone's interested, the Chinese text is:
往日歌楼头,你我曾同游。
且听君琴悠,且舞我云袖。
今日穿时空,唯吾独自留。
无缘再聚首,不尽相思愁。
Bone Lazy and 菲南 赵 have commented on ways to improve this part! The "building's top floor" more specifically to the open-air top of an opera house, and rather than just playing, they also traveled together. Thank you!
2:36 Thanks to Bone Lazy for correcting my mistake! "生查子" is a type of Song Dynasty poem, and it should be romanized as Sheng Zha Zi (not Cha). Bone Lazy also commented with many more incredible corrections (thank you so so so much aaaaahh)
4:16 This isn't so much a note for this particular spot as it is for the song in general, and it's not necessarily super urgent, but I just wanted to mention it because it's so gorgeous. Rain is often used as a metaphor for romantic/sad poetry. The rain comes down from the sky in long strings (as seen toward the beginning of the PV), which is also like Tianyi's memories (long streams that she can draw up and thing about), which is also like silk strands (a metaphor in the original Chinese that I didn't include in the translation). She's in the rain right now, but the rain falling also reflects her feelings and internal state. It's too beautiful for me to be able to translate while encompassing all of the original meaning.
