General Omar Bradley and Operation Cobra - Normandy 1944
One of three specials about Operation Cobra
By the middle of July 1944 the Allied advance in Normandy had stalled and the Allies faced stiff enemy resistance and terrain which in many cases greatly favoured the Germans. To break the stalemate, General Bradley and other Commanders launched "Operation Cobra." Starting with a massive aerial bombardment of a rectangle along the Periers-Saint Lo road the American VII and VIII corps were to punch through German lines to gain maneuvering room for mechanized forces. In today's show we look at Bradley's early life, his entry into the army and the evolution of his leadership style. We then move on to summarising his first weeks in Normandy leading up to and including this audacious plan.
