1. Add a page number in Google Docs
We’ll start by looking at how to add a page number to Docs.

We’re working in the web version of Google docs

Let’s start by opening a new document.

To add a page number, we need to click on Format in the top bar
and then scroll down and choose Page numbers.

From the window that opens, we have a number of options for inserting page numbers.

First we need to confirm if we want to add the page number to the Header, that’s the top of the document, or the Footer at the bottom of the page.

The next option asks if you want to start the page numbering from the first page. If your document has a title page, you may want to uncheck this box so that the page numbering starts on the second page.

As this document doesn’t have a title page, we’ll leave this box checked.

And the final decision to make is whether we want to start the page numbering at 1 or alternatively we can enter another number of our choice.

To confirm all our choices, click on the Apply button.

And you’ll see that the Page number is now shown at the top of the page.

If you want to quickly amend any of the page number settings you made previously, you can click on the Options link shown below the header and choose Page numbers to access the options window.

2. Reposition and reformat the page number in Google Docs
We’ll now look at how to reposition and reformat the page number in Google Docs.

By default, page numbers are placed on he right of the header or footer.

If you want to change the position of the number, click into the section of the document with the page number in it by double clicking.

If we choose the alignment options from the top menu bar, we can then reposition the page number to the left hand side or centre of the page.
Any changes made in this section are also made in the other sections of the document.

In the same way, once the page number is selected, you can also change the formatting in the usual way by adding bold or underline, changing the font type or colour or resizing it from the top menu bar.
