Van Gogh Tribute: First Ever Light Painting Drone Show
An unprecedented technology used for the first time in the world — a 1,000 drone light painting broadcasted on a hologauze screen in real time. The light painting drone show featured the world-famous Van Gogh paintings for art connoisseurs at a private party in Dubai, the UAE, in October 2024.
For an exclusive art lovers’ meeting, we decided to push the boundaries of standard drone shows. Namely, to launch a drone show that seemed to render nothing accurate in the sky but, through long exposure, recreated Van Gogh's masterpieces on a nearly invisible hologauze screen.
Analyzing Van Gogh’s techniques, we used precise algorithms and 1,000 drones to mimic the artist’s brushstrokes.
A powerful projector then broadcasted the long exposure light illustrations of ‘The Starry Night’ and ‘Sunflowers’ in real-time onto a giant screen. Performed the sounds of violin, it created an immense visual and aesthetic effect.
The main objective was to showcase how creative yet complex solutions can transform events into the most inspirational experiences.
To fulfill that, 34 Lumasky professionals worked on the Van Gogh drone show over 4 weeks, handling planning, animation, flight tests, equipment delivery, and permits, while collaborating closely with the event hosts to create a flawless experience for art connoisseurs.
The feedback from 70 art lovers who saw it live was overwhelmingly positive, sparking discussions about groundbreaking drone technology and Van Gogh's legacy.
Drone light painting with real-time broadcast has potential beyond art events. Apart from screens, such images can be projected onto buildings or mountains to scale the performance and involve the surroundings. It offers thrilling possibilities for sports, branding, and cultural gatherings to captivate audiences and elevate events to unprecedented heights.
