John List was a bank exec and a Sunday school teacher. He lived in a beautiful house in New Jersey with his wife and three children. He seemed to have the perfect life. But what people did not know was that beneath the perfect exterior, List was a cold man, with few friends and a lack of basic social skills which meant he was often fired from jobs.

For weeks List had been leaving his home every morning and pretending to go to work. Actually, he was going to the train station to spend all day reading. But the bills were not being paid and the foreclosure process had begun on the mortgage, so List had to act quickly before his lie was discovered.

On November 9th, 1971, while the children were still at school List shot his wife Helen, 46 and his own mother Alma 84. When his eldest child Patricia 16 and younger son Frederick 13 came home for lunch he shot them both in the back of the head. After enjoying his own midday snack he drove to his bank to close his mother's account as well as his own, then he went to watch his eldest son John, 15 play in a soccer match at Westfield High School. After driving young John home, List found that he had to shoot him several times because his son was trying to defend himself.

List placed the bodies in sleeping bags in the ballroom. He left a letter for his pastor to explain he had killed his family to save their souls because there was too much evil in the world. He cleaned up and taking any photographs of himself, he left. It was a month before the bodies were found and almost 18 years before List was finally captured. He had moved to Denver, changed his name and remarried. He was given five life sentences and died in prison in 2008 aged 82.
