Ship description
Sailing schooner, one of five schooners of the "Gonets" type. The length of the schooner, according to information from various sources, was from 30.2 to 30.3 meters, width - 7.8 meters, draft - 4 meters. The ship’s armament consisted of two 3-pound cannons, fourteen 18-pound carronades and one 36-pound gun-carronades.
Service history
The schooner "Swallow" was laid in Nikolaev on February 10, 1837 and after launching on June 12, 1838, it became part of the Black Sea Fleet. The construction was conducted by the shipmaster S. I. Chernyavsky.
During the years 1838-1840 and 1844-1851, she annually participated in operations along the coast of the Caucasus as part of units. On May 22, 1840, as part of the squadron of Vice-Admiral M. P. Lazarev, she took part in the landing of troops at the mouth of the Psezuapse River.
March 3, 1851 was in the Tsemess Bay, hit the storm, was torn from the anchor and stranded. To facilitate the vessel, the crew cut down the masts. The crew was removed from the schooner. On March 6, the schooner managed to get off the ground, after which the ship was delivered for repair.
In 1841 and 1842, the schooner was at the disposal of the Russian mission in Greece. She went into practical voyages to the Black Sea in 1844, 1845 and 1852, and in 1853 went to Constantinople.
She took part in the Crimean War. In 1854 she was in the Sevastopol harbor to protect the arsenal and the blockhouses. In the same year it was flooded at the Sevastopol raid. After the war, when clearing the Sevastopol Bay, the body of the schooner was blown up
