β-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein that is initially secreted by trophoblast cells in the embryo shortly after it implants in the uterus.
Tests to detect the presence of this hormone are carried out in order to determine early on if pregnancy has been achieved and to ensure suitable follow-up procedures.
