A high-tech Scandinavian survey vessel, Stril Explorer, leads an international team to uncover archaeological mysteries beneath the Black Sea, using advanced sonar and remotely operated vehicles. The Black Sea's unique anoxic depths (below 150 meters) preserve ancient shipwrecks, creating a “dead zone” free of oxygen and life like shipworms. Researchers locate and study remarkably preserved Ottoman-era shipwrecks (circa 300 years old), complete with intact carvings, ropes, and artefacts.
