"Just teach us the song!!"

A little “rant” I went on in my latest song tutorial video…

I often get comments that say “Just show us how to play it, don’t explain so much!”

Over the years, I’ve made many tweaks to my approach, based on constructive criticism that I’ve taken to heart.

However, this is one where I want to plant my flag, knowing full well that my teaching isn’t for everyone.

Covering songs with chord-based piano accompaniment is a creative process. We interpret the original recording (which often includes many more instruments than just piano) to fit our needs, skill level, and vision.

One of my favorite parts of doing covers is making arrangement decisions, and I like to let you in on that thought process.

My hope is that you will not only memorize songs through my videos but also learn to be more independent and gain confidence in learning songs on your own without a tutorial.

There are countless "Synthesia" tutorials on YouTube where you can just memorize a series of notes.

But I worry that many people do this uncritically, thinking they are just “learning the song.”

It is always someone’s interpretation.

There are often inaccuracies, or opportunities to make it easier OR more decorated.

I hope this perspective is helpful to keep in mind. Let’s keep making piano creative and fun!
