In this part, called 'Lakes on Mars' (with English subtitles), the Russian Himalayan club expedition is leaving Namche-Bazar and passing by the famous stupa dedicated to the legendary sherpa Tenzing Norgay aka Tiger of the Snow. We're heading to sacred Gokyo lakes. You will also see Sergey Vertelov reviewing the Great Himalayas from the Everest View hotel observation deck at dawn. You will also enjoy seeing the magnificent Ama-Dablam before the expedition finally reaches the Gokyo lakes. It is there you'll get to know why we call it the Lakes on Mars.
About the series:
We did it! The Russian Himalayan Club expedition to Nepal, of four Russians and three Nepalese, has made it from Phakding to the top of Gokyo Ri peak (5360 meters above the sea level, which is higher than Mount Blanc). It is by no means the highest peak in the Himalayas, still, it is one of the highest destinations that could be reached by trekking. Anything above it requires a full-scale climbing gear. It was six days up the path along the white-water mountain rivers that, as we go higher, become glacier lakes and, eventually, glaciers. The expedition’s milestones are the helicopter trip to Phakding, entering the Sagaramatha National Park, crossing the one of the world’s highest suspension bridges at the Khumbu region, the first Everest view from the Everest View hotel, seeing the sacred Gokyo glacier lakes and, finally, climbing to the top of Gokyo Ri peak.
It has nothing to do, though, with altitudes achieved or distances covered. It is not just the physical transition up the path, a transition that could be measured in steps, miles or days. More tangible was not the fingerprints that we’ve left in the Himalayas but what the Himalayas have imprinted in our souls: the snow-covered mountain peaks, resembling walls in the skies, the fully blossom rhododendrons, the Himalayan cedars, the flamboyant dzobkes and the rogue yaks…
