"Like a jigsaw puzzle with one lost part, I'm left without a heart"
"From David Ruffin's first solo album, "My Whole World Ended," comes "Pieces Of A Man." A wonderful Johnny Bristol-Pamela Sawyer composition, this represents what I always think of as "bulldozer" songs; songs that kind of pick up steam as they roll along, flattening everything in their path.
"My first time hearing "Pieces Of A Man" I didn't think much from the first few seconds of the song. Nothing spectacular. But as the song kept rolling on, it seemed as if it were picking up kinetic energy- like a runaway bulldozer. David kept tossing off one simile after about being broken into pieces after "fate moved in with the ugly hand" and crushed him. The song snuck up on me. I didn't realize how much I was getting into it. There is a nice little instrumental break and then the accusations begin again, David's anger just barely being kept in check.
The best part of all, just when I thought the song was over, there was yet ONE MORE simile: "like a jigsaw puzzle with one lost part, I'm left without a heart..." I didn't see that coming and to my 10-year old mind, this unexpected bit was like something thrown in for extra credit, a bonus!"
