In this episode of Urban Debate, the host Shreya Dhoundial will be discussing how Amnesty International's Canadian affiliate reported on Monday that a cyberattack supported by China had targeted the organisation. According to the human rights organisation, the breach was discovered on October 5 and an investigation was launched with the help of forensic investigators and cybersecurity specialists. Amnesty International Canada's Secretary General, Ketty Nivyabandi, claimed that searches made in their database were particularly and only about China and Hong Kong, as well as a few well-known Chinese activists. By using hackers with ties to the Chinese government, millions of dollars in Covid relief payments have been taken. According to the report, a hacker gang known as APT41 stole at least $20 million in Covid assistance payments, including small business loans and unemployment funds, from more than a dozen states. Chinese hackers are suspected of carrying out the cyberattack on Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which compromised the personal information of millions of patients and targeted five important systems at the top hospital. It was alleged that the stolen data was sold on the dark web.
We are joined by a few panelists.
"Cyber attacks are normal, recovery is the problem, there was no plan. India isn't serious," says Amit Dubey, National Security Expert & Crime Investigator on Cyber Forensics & Ethical Hacking.
"China with such Cyber attacks wants to send a message that they can reach anywhere. Political leadership can't be in denial," says Maroof Raza, Group Consulting Editor, Times Network.
