Local gay and lesbian students are the focus of a documentary film, that was produced to educate public school teachers in North Carolina. "Allies Matter" is a powerful look at the day-to-day struggles of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens. It was produced at Erwin High, primarily because of the school's advanced approach to the controversial issue. A student/teacher group called "Allied Club" offers safety and support. Some other Western North Carolina schools were also involved in the production. "Allies Matter" is being used at educator workshops across the state, for teachers and administrators to get a better understanding of what they need to be doing at their schools. You can watch the 17-minute short film on youtube. By Frank Kracher
