While the full story may not be completed for a while, the developers have the resources to continue the journey in the form of a second part.
As for the potential release timeline, we know that Genshin Impact is set to expand with at least two regions: Snezhnaya and the devastated Khaenri'ah. The overall Genshin story could potentially reach its conclusion around 2027.
Thus, it is reasonable to assume that Genshin 2 might be released sometime between late 2027 and early 2028, which is about 3-4 years from now. The next journey is far from over.
Regarding the main character, it's worth noting that in miHoYo games, heroes are often designed to be blank slates, unfamiliar with the game world.
There are several possibilities for the direction Genshin 2 could take:
1. An introduction that delves into the history of Teyvat and its legends before the Traveler's arrival.
2. A completely new environment, perhaps on another continent or even a colonized planet, with different characters, tales, and mechanics, similar to Honkai Impact 3rd.
3. A direct continuation, allowing players to continue their journey as Travelers.
