Amid the ongoing language row in Tamil Nadu, the state government has replaced the Indian rupee symbol with the Tamil letter for 'ru', the first letter of the Tamil word 'Rubaai' meaning 'rupee' in Tamil, in its logo for the budget 2025-26, set to be tabled in the state assembly on Friday.
This change has sparked concerns over whether a symbol, part of a nation's legal tender, can be altered by state governments without central approval.
The Indian Rupee symbol (₹) is based on the Devanagari letter ⟨र⟩ (ra), with a double horizontal line at the top, and the Latin capital letter ⟨R⟩ without its vertical bar. It was officially adopted by India in 2010.
Before the rupee symbol's introduction, Indian currency was represented simply by "Rs" or "INR" for international transactions.
In 2008, the government launched a nationwide design competition for the rupee symbol, won by D. Udaya Kumar from IIT Guwahati.
The adoption of the rupee symbol aimed to give India’s currency a global presence, on par with other major currencies like the dollar ($), euro (€), and yen (¥).
The symbol was officially included in the Unicode Standard in 2011, ensuring its global use in digital platforms worldwide, marking a major milestone in India’s digital economy.
