VID (Russian: ВИD, lit. “View”) is a Russian TV production company founded by Vladislav Listyev in 1990. It is best known for producing entertainment programs and kids’ TV shows. Notably, its logo frightened many Russian children!
VID’s logo has garnered both controversy and popularity for its visually creepy and austere appearance. The wordmark uses the Latin “D” instead of the Cyrillic “Д”, making the logo appear as “ВИD” instead of “ВИД”.
When the company was founded, Listyev envisioned the logo as the head of the Chinese Taoist philosopher Guo Xiang, whose likeness was found at the Museum of Eastern Art in Moscow. However, the museum did not permit the use of the actual head, prompting Listyev to create a “mask” of Xiang’s head using computer graphics.
