CINE Talks 2021: "Anion-exchange Membranes for Electrochemical Systems: The Challenges of The Technology" by Elisabete Inácio Santiago

In electrochemical systems, aqueous solutions are the electrolytes (ion carriers) of choice due to simplicity of preparation and handling, wide variety of carrier ions with different ionic mobility, as well as cost. However, disadvantages such as narrow potential window, usually limited by H2 and O2 evolution reactions (HER and OER), low solubility of gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide, and constant need for concentration and ionic strength correction in continuous operation systems, make the use of aqueous electrolytes quite restricted, especially in electrochemical reactors. Solid electrolytes based on Ion Exchange Membranes constitute an important class of dense (solid) polymeric membranes with functional groups and ionic species attached to the polymer matrix, also called ionomeric membranes. These membranes allow ions of opposite charge (counterions) bounded to the functional group to be selectively conducted between the functional groups, thus generating the ionic conduction mechanism. This type of electrolyte has established as a key component in water desalination processes, electrolysis and, at present, very strongly in energy storage and conversion systems such as fuel cells. The state of the art, challenges and future perspectives will be the theme of this conference.
