5.Stingray Classica: Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle PREMIERE: from May 5 | Every SUN | 9:02 PM
May 22 marks the 211th birth anniversary of German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). To celebrate his music, Stingray Classica broadcasts the composer’s opus magnum: the four-part music drama cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. Wagner, perhaps the greatest innovator of the opera genre in the nineteenth century, aimed for the creation of a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ in which theatre, music and words are united. He is known for his use of so-called ‘Leitmotivs’, recurrent melodic motifs that represent a certain character, idea, or situation. Wagner used hundreds of leitmotivs throughout his Ring cycle. The cycle consists of Das Rheingold (1869), Die Walküre (1870), Siegfried (1876), and Götterdämmerung (1876). Stingray Classica presents the productions by Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Dutch National Opera under the baton of maestro Hartmut Haenchen, from 5 May, every Sunday in May at 9:02pm.
