On June 15, 2022 the Wolf Conservation Center hosted a free webinar, "The 'Decolonization' of Conservation is Deeper than You Think," with Jazmin “Sunny” Murphy.

Sunny discussed the decolonization of conservation, the parallels of Eurocentric ideological perspectives toward Indigenous people and native carnivores such as wolves and coyotes, and provided tips to dismantle the imbalance of power in U.S. conservation.

Sunny is a science communicator and reporter, specializing in the intersection between North American canid ecology and Black & Indigenous history in the U.S. Through web content writing and journalism, Sunny works to put quality information in the hands of the people, helping the public to understand the historical and scientific contexts of present-day issues.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sunny earned a B.Sc. in Zoology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is pursuing a M.Sc. in Environmental Policy and Management through the American Public University System. Her current research focuses on the cognitive and behavioral ecology of coyotes in urban vs. rural vs. natural landscapes and how this knowledge can be applied to nonlethal management practices. She has also authored a few books including Americans Hate Coyotes: How the War on America’s song Dog Began and why it persists.
