An acoustic kit can provide the power and volume needed for a gig – but can only provide one sound. Sometimes, you need your kit to sound different from song to song, to sound more like the original track, for example. By layering electronic sounds on top of the acoustic drums, it’s possible to vary and change the drum sound for each song in the set.

Hybrid drumming combines technology with acoustic drums, so you can reinforce and complement your acoustic drum sound by adding electronic sounds. More drum sounds, improved sound quality, higher production values for your performance—with hybrid... the possibilities are endless.

In this video, Roland RT-30 series acoustic drum triggers are mounted to the kick and snare drums of a compact, mid-range drum set, and connected to a TM-2 trigger module. As the acoustic drum heads are hit, the triggers send a signal to the module to play an electronic sample, which is played in perfect time with the acoustic sound, without delay. The two sounds are played together to create an acoustic-electronic ‘hybrid’ sound.

HOW WE RECORDED THE SOUND:
The acoustic drums have individual microphones on each drum. In addition, room microphones and overhead microphones are placed around the kit. The acoustic microphone mix you are hearing is 70% room and overhead mics, 30% instrument mics in an attempt to capture the sound as if you were in the room.

The Roland electronic drum module sound is sent direct to powered PA speakers. A microphone is placed in front of these speakers to record the amplified sound in an attempt to show the sound as it would be heard by the audience, when using a typical PA system used in small venues and street performances.

The drum module sound from the PA speakers is muted, using the recording mixing desk, to show the acoustic sound only during the performance for easy comparison of the hybrid sound on/off.
