RMS Voltage - Root Mean Squared Values
All AC voltages you see around the world are given in RMS values... for example our mains power is 230V in the UK. That 230V is the RMS value of the voltage we receive at home. The peak voltage of the mains is about 325V.
Very important to understand RMS values as an electrical engineer. RMS is the ac equivalent of the dc voltage or current.
The r.m.s. value of an a.c. signal is equal to the value of dc voltage/current which would have the same effect or energy change as the a.c.
Think of it like this, the RMS value is the ac value thats needed to do the exact same job as a dc supply.
Imagine you have a 12v battery in your car and you connect an LED bulb to it. The RMS value would be the value of the AC power source to light the bulb to the exact same brightness.
Since AC goes from 0v to peak, you couldn't just use a 12V ac source since it would peak at 12v and then drop back to zero. Therefore the light would only hit the correct brightness very briefly.
