There are some big improvements in modems and routers that are going to appear later this year. Part of that will be the DOCSIS 3.1 standard that will allow for internet speeds of 1-GIGABIT. Comcast has said that speeds up to 10-GIGABIT are even possible using a household modem.
Later this year, Comcast plans to start testing the DOCSIS 3.1 modems and 1-GIGABIT internet in the U.S. and plan to have their entire footprint covered with 1-GIGABIT internet by 2018.
