If you want to get better gas mileage start with your tires. You need to keep them rotated, balanced and properly aligned. Why? Because tires create resistance which can help or hurt gas mileage. Keeping the tires properly inflated will get the best fuel economy.
Next on the list is your air filter. Your engine needs air for the fuel to combust, so make sure your filter is clean, creating the least amount of resistance from the engine requiring air. I recommend an AEM Air Filter because they’re reusable and don’t require oil like K and N’s do.
Make sure to also keep your spark plugs maintained because bad misfiring spark plugs can actually affect your gas mileage by up to 25%.
Now make sure to get rid of any extra stuff in your car to create less weight. Remember that every 100lbs of stuff loses you about 2% in fuel economy on an average sized sedan.
Lastly your fuel grade. Just stick the grade that your manufacturer recommends. You don’t need to go higher in octane and don’t go lower. You’ll get worse gas mileage and your engine will knock if you don’t have sufficient octane in your gas. E85 fuel has about 25% less energy than regular gas, so make sure that it’s at least 25% cheaper if you’re going to use it. And make sure that your car can use E85. Most cars can run on about 10% ethanol, but double check to see if your car can run on E85.
I did forget to mention that keeping your oil changed on schedule helps with better mpg. When your oil is dirty, your engines moving parts have to work harder than with clean oil. Plus it’s just common sense to properly maintain your car with regular oil changes.
