Let's understand why underexposure is ruining photography, what its purpose is and the viable alternatives to its use.
What is underexposure?
Essentially, we say that a photograph is underexposed when we do not take advantage of all the ambient light in the composition of our images.
Recently, some photographers have started to use a technique of subexposing the image on purpose, in order to preserve the highlights, and recover the shadow areas in the edition.
A high-contrast photo is where the difference in EVs from the high-light area to the mid-tone area is much greater than the camera can record,
Problems with the use of the underexposure technique
Although it is possible to recover underexposed images during the editing process, even when shooting in raw, the problem is that the recovered areas are noisy.
Even if the objective of preserving the areas of high light is achieved, the added noise in the shadow areas is very high, even when working at low ISO.
Furthermore, in this technique it is considered that the area of the sky is equivalent to the average tone of the scene or even darker, reaching cases in which the camera's photometer indicates -1 EV for the exposure of the sky.
This further increases the contrast of the scene, making it more difficult to recover the shadow areas in the edit.
Exposure latitude and dynamic range.
To solve this problem, we need to decrease the contrast of the scene, either by shooting in a lower contrast area, or by using lighting for the darker areas.
We must consider that the sky is a source of light, even if the sun is not appearing in the picture. This way, we will decrease the exposure latitude, that is, the difference in tones between the lightest and darkest areas of the scene.
This way, we take advantage of the dynamic range of the camera and no longer have noise in the dark areas of the photo.
Conclusion
We saw that the underexposure, although it fulfills the function it is proposed to, is not justified due to the digital noise it adds to the photo.
By using a light source for the darkest areas, we can control the contrast of the scene, making it much more harmonious and noiseless in the dark areas.
