Mother’s Day was originally an anti-war movement that can be traced back to Julia Ward Howe and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. It was a day of peace inspired by the tragedies of the American Civil War and Europe’s Franco-Prussian War. It was celebrated on June 2nd until 1931 when the holiday shifted to a May celebration date.

One curious controversy is a grammatical one over where to put that apostrophe? Today, the United States places it before the letter “s” – celebrating moms individually. But internationally, the holiday evolved from much older traditions and philosophies (some going all the way back to Roman times) that placed it after the “s”
