On Tuesday 14 November 2023, the Health Law and Ethic Network co-hosted the Monthly Lunchtime Seminar Series with the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research (CAPR) and the Department of Public Health at La Trobe University on The Genie is Out of the Bottle: Citizens Do Have the Right to Know! Ireland Legislates for Health Labelling on Alcohol Products with Eunan McKinney.
Ireland now leads the world in the introduction of health labelling on alcohol products. From May 2026, all alcohol products sold in Ireland must display a range of health information, including warnings that alcohol has a direct link with fatal cancers, causes liver disease and harms the foetus. Calorie content must also be included. Similar health information must also be available and displayed in licensed premises and online. This seminar will explore the policy development process for the labelling measure from strategic recommendation through to commencement; examine the layers of parliamentary processes and institutional scrutiny, both domestically and internationally; and highlight the capacity of an alcohol health alliance to sustain and overcome industry-led tactics that obstructed and delayed implementation.
