TL;DR - The 5800X3D is the best value for a top tier gaming CPU ever. I believe it will remain in the top tier of gaming CPUs even when Zen 4 and Raptor Lake. Even though it may fall a bit behind the next generation powerhouses, its strength will be its value. I predict it will still hang with the best gaming CPUs, but the bang for the back that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D offers will be continue to go unmatched.
I used the same complementary hardware for both CPUs (specs below). The 5600X was overclocked while the 5800X3D was undervolted because these were the best methods I found for squeezing out the most performance out of each chip. Low values are skewed because the numbers were inaccurate from switching in and out of menus and alt-tabbing in and out of the game in raid. However, this is a normal part of the game and I will come up with a mechanism to accurately capture the lows going forward.
Due to PC hardware availability rising and prices falling, many people have been asking me about hardware upgrade recommendations. I think the big question for most people is...
Is it worth it to upgrade right now? The 5800X3D is 100% worth upgrading to if you're in the market right now. If you're on a 5600X right now and thinking of upgrading, you don't even need to worry abou the motherboard or RAM. The 5800X3D is so well optimized and tuned out of the box that it gets maximum performance in games no matter what RAM you pair with it. I think it will remain the best bang for the buck top tier gaming CPU into next generation and I think it may never be matched in terms of its price to performance ratio.
