Minnesota entered the 1996 WCHA Final Five as the second seed, and after dispatching Alaska-Anchorage in the tourney’s First Round, drew the sixth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee in the semifinals.

The sixth-place Badgers had pulled off a surprising sweep of Doug Woog’s Gophers just two weeks prior in Madison, but this time Minnesota was not to be denied. With the game tied at three heading into overtime, “Mister March” Nick Checco took off on a breakaway to score the game-winner 11 minutes and 26 seconds into the extra period.

The Gophers would go on to defeat Michigan Tech 7-2 to win the WCHA Tournament and the Broadmoor Trophy.

“Mister March” Nick Checco’s game-winner against Wisconsin in the 1996 WCHA Final Five semifinals is today’s White Bear Mitsubishi Great Moment in Gopher History.
