On September 6, 2024, Boeing's Starliner spacecraft successfully returned to Earth uncrewed after a three-month mission. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were the first crew to fly aboard Starliner in June, remained on the ISS while the spacecraft autonomously undocked at 6:04 p.m. ET (2204 GMT) on Friday. The uncrewed return was a critical test phase for Starliner, which reentered Earth's atmosphere at around 11 p.m. ET at speeds of approximately 17,000 miles (27,400 km) per hour. Following reentry, Starliner deployed parachutes and inflated airbags, safely landing at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico. Despite the successful return, NASA's previous decision to exclude astronauts from the capsule due to safety concerns has introduced uncertainty into Starliner's certification process for future missions.
