Brave Browser is a product from Brave Software, a company founded in May 2015 by its CEO - the creator of JavaScript and former CEO of the Mozilla Corporation - Brendan Eich and CTO Brian Bondy.
The first version of Brave Browser was released on the 20th of January, 2016, and already included an ad-blocking feature. At the same time, Brave Software announced their plans for a privacy-respecting ad-feature and a revenue-sharing program.
The first pay-to-surf test version of Brave Browser was released in June 2018 which came preloaded with roughly 250 ads and sent a detailed log of the user's browsing activity to Brave for the short-term purpose of testing this functionality.
Before Brave Software switched their Browser to Chromium in 2018 Brave Browser ran on a fork of Electron called Muon, which they marketed as a "more secure fork".
The probably primary reason for Brave Browser's switch to Chromium was likely that their Chromium-based version of Brave Browser is easier to maintain.
Roughly four years after incorporation Brave Software finally launched their first stable release of Brave Browser on the 13th of November, 2019. At that time, Brave Browser already had around 8.7 million monthly active users.
Since then Brave Browser's userbase has been growing consistently and crossed 25 million active users in early 2021.
