ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Art class is easily turned into a history and science lesson with just one demonstration.
At Koontz Intermediate, students are studying Japanese art. Inside, the pottery is glowing. The glaze on the surface is like molten glass.
The artwork is then carefully placed inside the cans of combustible material. The smoke is producing carbon which will stick to the clay, turning it jet black.
This is a modernized raku firing which dates back to 16th century japan.
In class, the sixth graders created their own Japanese tea bowls. Students say it's a fun way to learn about other countries.
"You get to know a lot of stuff about other cultures like Japanese tea bowls and other stuff about art and other countries," Koontz student Maddox said.
Students also gain some science knowledge during the demonstration. By the way raku means "enjoyment" , "comfort" or "ease."
