Without a doubt, the oils that you cook with can have a huge positive or negative effect on your overall health.
And it just so happens that some of the most commonly used cooking oils happen to be the most unhealthy.
What are these cooking oils? They are known as vegetable oils or as industrial seed oils and they are incredibly unhealthy for 5 reasons (more on that below).
Which ones am I talking about? Here they are in all their (unhealthy) glory:
Canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, cotton seed oil, grapeseed oil, and rice bran oil.
Here's why you should avoid them at all costs:
1. They are found all over the place in just about every food you can think of.
2. They contain high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids.
3. They stick around in your body for a long period of time.
4. The reheating of toxic oils results in the creation of more toxic byproducts.
5. The conventional food establishment is trying to convince everyone that they are heart-healthy.
What can get confusing is that there are some studies that do show that these oils may be beneficial.
But why is it that ultra-processed foods are known to cause problems but ultra-processed cooking oils are not? This is one of those situations where the studies and the results don't quite add up.
My recommendation is to stick to cold-pressed, whole-food-based cooking oils like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and butter or ghee.
Combine these with healthy fats from whole foods and you'll be set.
