As anti-armor weapons have become more powerful, armies have reacted by increasing the thickness and resilience of vehicle armor. Modern ammunition, however, destroys even the strongest armor, forcing armies to develop Explosive Reactive Armor and active protection systems. As heavy and thick metal plates impede mobility. Although the idea of explosive reactive armor was presented in USSR earlier it was first deployed operationally by Israel in the Lebanon war of 1982 on M60 tanks. ERA also counters explosively forged projectiles, as produced by a shaped charge. The counter-explosion disrupt the incoming projectile so that its momentum is distributed in all directions rather than towards the target, greatly diminishing its effectiveness. And against APFSDS, the projected plates serve to deflect and break up the rod. Almost every tank In Russian ground forces inventory is equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA), in this video we will review different types of ERA packages deployed on Russian tanks.
