The Basic Proportionality Theorem also known as Thales' Theorem is a fundamental principle in geometry that states the following:
If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle and intersects the other two sides, it divides those sides proportionally.
In other words, if a line parallel to one side of a triangle intersects the other two sides, the ratio of the lengths of the segments it creates on those sides is equal. Mathematically, if a line parallel to side BC of triangle ABC intersects AB at D and AC at E, then the Basic Proportionality Theorem can be expressed as:
BD / DA = CE / EA
This theorem is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Thales, who is credited with its discovery. The Basic Proportionality Theorem is a special case of the more general Thales' Theorem, which deals with the properties of a circle inscribed in a right-angled triangle.
