SWITZERLAND - A VILLAGE DESTROYED BY INUNDATIONS - FATAL DISASTER IN SWITZERLAND
In August 2024, the municipality of Brienz in the Bernese Oberland was heavily affected by severe storms that caused extensive flooding and significant damage. Violent thunderstorms on August 12 and 13 triggered flash floods, leading to the evacuation of around 70 residents. The train station and several vehicles were submerged, and debris was scattered across the area. In particular, parts of Brienz, including roads and residential areas, were rendered inaccessible due to flooding and landslides, prompting the authorities to enforce restricted zones for safety reasons
Brienz is a picturesque village located on the northeastern shore of Lake Brienz in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery and crystal clear lake waters, Brienz is a popular tourist destination. The village has a long tradition in wood carving and is also known for its sculpture museum.
The local community is usually involved in tourism, handicrafts and agriculture. Although the population is small, the area is heavily visited due to its natural beauty and tourist attractions
The floods also affected the local cemetery in Brienz, where several graves were destroyed by the overflowing waters. This was one of the most dramatic consequences of the catastrophe, adding a profound human dimension to the natural impact
Recovery efforts were immediately underway, with rescue teams and firefighters working to clear debris and ensure the safety of the evacuated population. Emergency services also set up temporary shelters for the displaced individuals. Despite the challenging circumstances, the community has been mobilizing resources, and efforts to restore essential services like water and electricity are progressing
The situation has been exacerbated by climate change, which has increased the frequency and severity of these extreme weather events in Switzerland
The floods also affected traffic between Interlaken and Lucerne, as well as transport on Lake Brienz, which was interrupted until 18 August. Although a major disaster was averted thanks to a dam built above the town, the situation remained difficult, with trains and roads temporarily closed.
