Firstgear Kilimanjaro Jacket 2011 Review

Touting a laundry list of upgrades over the last generation, the Firstgear Kilimanjaro Jacket remains at the same price point but offers a greater deal of features and functionality than previously. The armor has been hugely upgraded from standard CE armor to streamlined d3o molecular-level armor, which is soft and malleable for comfort, but becomes rigid on impact, absorbing and dispersing energy. The shell fabrics have changed from a 600D polyester to a 400D nylon with 640D high-density nylon in impact areas. The 400D nylon is lighter and actually more abrasion resistant than the polyester, and slower to absorb heat so you can comfortably ride in this jacket up to around the 80º F mark. The ventilation scheme has also been redesigned with the front vents moved to the upper chest and the formerly single horizontal rear exhaust vent being transitioned to two 9.5" vertical exhausts. With two pit zips added to the mix, they have definitely optimized the airflow. Also, FG has tailored the fit of this jacket, so while it is still a generous American cut, there are loads of adjustment areas to cinch it down and streamline the fit. Adding all of these improvements (and more that we simply can't fit here) and keeping the price point is a pretty major deal for Firstgear this year. We're big fans of this jacket, especially the hi-viz colorway.
