Software development falls somewhere between the realms of science and art. Some might even say it is the perfect blend.
Most software development, especially in a commercial context, is like building complex machinery out of Lego. But do we overcomplicate it by trying to paint the Mona Lisa or carve the Venus de Milo every time? When we spend all our time trying to reinvent the wheel (believing that we can make a better wheel), we often never build the engine. Our deliveries are late, over budget, and might not even include all of the functionality that was requested.
Let us explore the future, knowing what we know now, of building complex machinery out of Lego, while also understanding the beauty found in building the bricks themselves.
