The question of whether or not to use packing after rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is different probably in the hands of every single surgeon. Some surgeons do not put packing in the nose. Some surgeons leave packing in the nose for a week. So, first of all, what is packing? There are these small, soft structures that are placed within the nose and the purpose of it is to prevent any bleeding and to prevent the accumulation of any fluid and to hold everything in place for at least during the time that the packing is in place. So I believe that packing helps prevent bleeding and it also helps prevent the accumulation of fluid and it helps prevent structures moving around that we don't want to move around.

Therefore, in my patients I tend to leave packing in for one night. I see all of my patients the next morning and when I see my patient the next morning, I remove the packing. I think that way there's the benefit of having the packing for approximately 12 to 24 hours. This will prevent any chance of bleeding in the first 12 to 24 hours. However, patients tend to not like the sensation of having packing in their nose.

Therefore, once we get to the 12 to 24 hour point, I take the packing out, because I don't believe that there is an enormous benefit after that time and I do believe that patients don't like it. So I use packing for approximately 12 to 24 hours and then I remove it.
