More than half a dozen films propagating right wing conspiracy theories like ‘Love Jihad’ are slated for release in the run up to the 2024 general election. You are no doubt familiar with the one already released, The Kerala Story. How effective can films potentially be in shaping public opinion? In generating hate? Will a ban on films that propagate hate be counterproductive as free speech absolutists claim? These are a few of the questions we asked Ira Bhaskar who till recently was Professor Cinema Studies at the School of Arts & Aesthetics, JNU.
