As the El Niño climate pattern comes to a close in the United States, evidence suggests there may be an increase in tornado activity this spring, particularly in the heart of Tornado Alley including Oklahoma and Nebraska, according to Jana Houser. Houser is a tornado researcher and associate professor of atmospheric sciences in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University. She says new research on tornadoes is using statistical models that could help further improve forecasting for the storms. Houser said the result may lead to a new alert that is between a tornado watch – indicating conditions are favorable for tornado development – and a tornado warning, in which a funnel cloud has been seen or detected by radar. Houser provides advice on what to do if you’re in a building or a car when a tornado approaches.
