*Privacy*
First up is privacy, and for many of you, this will be the most important feature. It’s why we get VPNs after all. ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland which has no data collection laws and has minimal data collection.

AtlasVPN is based in the United States, which isn’t the best country in the world for privacy. The service itself also boasts a minimal logs policy. Overall, both will protect your privacy, and it’s a bit of a draw here, but Switzerland may edge it to ProtonVPN.

On the security side, ProtonVPN uses AES-256 encryption - widely regarded as the gold standard in encryption technology. It has a range of protocol options, a kill switch, and split tunnelling. Not a bad tool belt. Now, is AtlasVPN safe? It also uses AES-256 encryption, has a kill switch, and a tunnelling protocol. All of which makes it a close contender with Proton - however with more options ProtonVPN edges it out and takes this round.

*Performance*
Nobody wants a slow VPN, but just how fast are these free options? ProtonVPN swings in with mediocre speeds - 85 Mbps download and 22 upload. AtlasVPN comes in with download speeds of 28 Mbps and upload speeds of 97 Mbps, which isn’t the best. Proton has more download, whereas Atlas has more Upload. Since Download is somewhat more important, we give this round to ProtonVPN.

*Streaming & Torrenting*
This brings us to streaming, which is a huge draw for people getting a VPN. ProtonVPN can technically access Netflix and other streaming services like Hulu, but you’ll need to be on the paid plan. Atlas used to unlock Netflix, but that’s sadly no longer true..
Torrenting is another big draw for those using VPNs. But how effective are the free offerings? Well, ProtonVPN only offers torrenting on its paid plans, whereas AtlasVPN doesn’t discriminate. So, in a straight showdown, Atlas comes out on top for that alone.
