I was never the popular kid at school.
We know children can be brutal and, unfortunately, I learned that lesson very early on in my life.
All children in my year were 7 years old, I was 6. They decided that because of that, I didn’t belong to the group.
And the fact that very quickly it turned out that I was one of the fastest-learning students in my class? A good reason to bully the geek.
I went to an inclusive primary school (szkoła integracyjna), which provided group & individualized education programs for, among others, gifted children, like me. However, I was great at adapting to different environments, so I never had individual classes.
🎓 I discovered my love for linguistics when it turned out that, in 5th grade, I was basically the only one who really understood the phonology, morphology and syntax of Polish. I was 10 and I was doing 11-year-olds’ homework assignments so that they would like me more. My own assignments were not enough for me - I wanted to explore the entirety of language as a system.
Every moment spent drawing syntactic trees and explaining phonological rules to my classmates was a moment I was going deeper into my purpose.
Which means that I have been a linguist at heart since I was a little girl.🫶
Now, I’m sharing the real story of a woman who became a linguist, a researcher, and a language mentor to thousands of people 👀
This is Part 1, the beginning of it all.
Parts 2-5 coming 🔜
