"If you've seen the Showtime special, Hitsville: The Making Of Motown, you only glimpsed the tip of the iceberg. For certain, it would have required a multiple-episode special to showcase most if not all of the talent that passed through Motown's Detroit studios; and that would be just the 60's... Time to dig a bit deeper into the groups and hits that made (and continue to make) Motown so famous.
Though many in general may not be as familiar with Brenda Holloway, it does seem that the numbers are going up thanks to avenues like You Tube. (and as of this edit, the 2017 film, "Detroit") If this is your first time hearing her, you'll more than likely echo what everyone else wonders: How is it that Motown never promoted this amazingly stunning and talented woman? The U.K. however has taken to her in a way that she deserved all along. (songs you may know include "Every Little Bit Hurts," "When I'm Gone" and "You've Made Me So Very Happy- the original recording, which she and her sister patrice wrote and Blood, Sweat and Tears later covered)
In this previously unreleased saga, written and produced by Smokey Robinson, lovely Brenda Holloway finds herself enduring a love interest who seems to not care one way or the other for how he treats her.
As they say, "you never miss your water til the well runs dry" and the well is about to run dry for Brenda's errant lover for there is another who loves Brenda.
Notice that the instrumentation is sparse, matching the mood of the song. In this case, the "less-is-more" approach works very well to allow us to really hear the immaculate vocals of Brenda and the Andantes.
A story well-told from beginning to end, another chapter in the story of Brenda Holloway.
PS.
Notice how the song ends the way it begins- only whereas at the outset, the Andantes are chanting how Johnny's coming, at the end, Johnny is out of the picture completely. It's beautiful to hear how Brenda holds that last note all the way to the end, and how the music just comes to a sighing end- (just like the like the feelings Brenda had for that no-good Johnny...)"
