The Canary Islands are a picturesque archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, a land of eternal summer with an ideal climate, emerald valleys, quaint cliffs and sandy beaches. Officially, the Canaries are an autonomous province of Spain, consisting of 7 larger islands (El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura) and several smaller ones. The cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria pass on the title of capital of the archipelago every 4 years.
Despite the fact that the Canary Islands formally belong to Spain, the atmosphere is anything but European. Tourists come for the exotic, with stunning tropical landscapes, gentle ocean waves, black volcanic beaches and delicious ripe fruit. Fortunately, these exotics are close and accessible: the flight to the islands is only a few hours, not including transfers. In the Canaries, you can not just idly relax on the beach: all over the islands scattered unique prehistoric monuments, volcanoes, waterfalls, "moon" valleys of frozen lava. There's also great service and a paradise for surfers and divers.
