What is the Dark Web if not the boogeyman of our days? Even Hollywood claims that accessing the Dark Web is a slippery slope, but what if you want to take it? In this video I will show you what the Dark Web is, what dangers can await you there and how to access the Dark Web safely.

=== What is the Dark Web? ===

Simply enough, the Dark Web explained is just the collective name for all the websites that are not indexed by search engines. This makes them only accessible by specific software, such as the Onion router, I2P, Freenet, or Riffle. You would also need to know the exact address of the page to access it.

Where Hollywood gets it right is that the Dark Web contains a treasure trove of illegal stuff. Still, people manage to find how to use the Dark Web for good: journalists employ it to dig for leaks and sensitive information and citizens under oppressive regimes can communicate there safely.

=== Is Dark Web safe? ===

Of course not! All the good applications don’t cancel the fact that the Dark Web is stock full of malware, trackers, phishing pages, and all manner of hacks and scams you have a slim chance of encountering otherwise. That said, accessing the Dark Web itself is totally legal, and actually can be rather safe, though very tricky to pull off.

=== How to access the Dark Web? ===

Personally, I consider TOR or The Onion Router to be the most consistent way to access the Dark Web. “What is TOR used for?” That is easy to answer: TOR works in a fashion similar to a VPN - it establishes a secure connection. Through TOR, you are connecting through multiple nodes, first - the entry node, then the intermediary one, and finally - to the exit node. That’s how to access the Dark Web with TOR - by passing through the nodes and securing your connection.

The easiest way to use TOR is to download a TOR browser and let it do most of the work for you. TOR provides possibly the best privacy you can get under normal circumstances, yet there are downsides to using it as well. My biggest problem with TOR is that after the exit node, the connection is no longer protected, making it possible to get injected with malware or get hit by a phishing link.

=== Useful tips for accessing the Dark Web ===

1. Close all non-essential apps, especially those connected to the internet.
2. Cover your webcam or disconnect it, just as a precaution.
3. Enable a trustworthy antivirus and a VPN to keep you secure.
4. Turn off your device’s location tracking.
5. When would you use TOR browser if not now? Just remember to make sure all the security is in place.
6. Do not just follow any Dark Web links, establish what you are looking for first.
