Gideon is a fantastic lane pusher. He can clear minion waves as fast as any hero in the game. His power spike for kills and damage really comes early to mid game, once you have his ultimate. Gideon's real power, however, is controlling the game through split pushing. Split pushing is when you go into a side lane and push your minion wave as far up as you can without the enemy team being able to close on you. Just make sure you don't forget your wards!! OK. Let's get into his abilities.
Gideon's passive is called Dark Infusion. This gives him bonus energy penetration. Simply put, this gives you more damage against enemy heroes. If any enemy builds energy armor, Dark Infusion will help you cut through that.
Gideon's Right Click ability is called Dark Tether. He shoots a projectile at a target location. If this connects with an enemy hero, it will tether you to them and slow them and do damage over time. However, if the enemy gets out of range or breaks line of sight, the tether will break and you will lose the slow and damage. This is a great ability to start fights with. If you can catch an enemy out, tether them to get the slow and allow your team to jump on them for the kill. Landing Dark Tether will also make it easier to land your Q ability.
Gideon's Q ability is called Cosmic Rift. This is what makes Gideon such a great split pusher. He opens a rift in the sky and drops meteors at a target location. After you complete one or two cards, Cosmic Rift will clear an entire minion wave easily. You may have to add a few auto attacks to the melee minions to finish off the wave. With a little bit of cooldown reduction, this ability will be up every time an enemy minion wave reaches you, making it perfect for wave clear. Early to mid game, Cosmic Rift also deals a ton of damage to enemy champions. A Dark Tether combined with a Cosmic Rift will deal a surprising amount of damage.
Gideon's E is called Torn Space. He opens a portal at a target location and quickly teleports there. This is a great tool for escaping ganks or just getting out of the way of incoming damage. Allied heroes can also use the portal by jumping into it. Using Torn Space offensively to get better positioning to use your ultimate is very risky, but also very rewarding.
Gideon's Ultimate is called Black Hole. This is really what makes Gideon, Gideon. He summons a black hole in a large radius around him. Enemies within the black hole are dragged towards him and take damage over time. He also receives a small shield and is immune to crowd control after Black Hole is cast. This is a fantastic ability for finishing off low health enemies in one on one situations, but really shines when you use it with your team. Time your ult correctly in a team fight, and the enemy team will be sucked into you, allowing your team to clean up the easy kills.
Now, Gideon does not do a lot of damage late game. However, he can push minion waves very easily in all stages of a match. Your main goal while playing as Gideon should be to push lanes to the enemy's core. When there is a team fight, make sure to time your Black Hole correctly. You don't want to use it too early or you will be focused down quickly. Wait until the enemy team is not focusing you and destroy them with a Torn Space into Black Hole combo. It will be an easy Ace with the follow up from your team.
I generally build Gideon with a decent amount of energy damage, but then I start a more tanky build. I will use one or two damage cards, just enough to clear a wave with one Cosmic Rift, then I will build health and armor. As Gideon, you will not be doing a huge amount of damage, so when you are using Black Hole, you'll want to stay alive as long as possible, which is where the health and armor come in. Some people prefer to build Gideon full damage, but I have found this build much better for split pushing and winning team fights.
