Infrastructure as code is a central idea in Continuous Delivery. The environment in which our software exists is a dependency of our software, so we need to control that environment as far as we can. If our aim is to release software reliably and repeatedly we need to control the variables so that the host environment is the one that our code needs. Infrastructure as code for cloud based systems is really table-stakes, but it also applicable for other kinds of software too. Infrastructure as code tools can be a big help, but the idea is about more than only tools.
In this episode Dave Farley describes three approaches to infrastructure management, describing ideas like immutable infrastructure and explores some of the techniques and devops approaches that help us to be confident in our ability to release change into production, and to re-create working environments on demand.
