A case of history nearly repeating itself! Back in 2012, Ezra brought a chipmunk to the nest that was still alive, and upon releasing it the chipmunk scrambled off the platform into freefall as both Ezra and Big Red dove off after it.
This year, during a scene of relative calm as the nestlings were all looking (off screen) at the platform above them, a flash of movement streaked by the right side of the screen, followed by 5 frames of Arthur in hot pursuit, wings drawn back, tail flared, dropping straight down. No guarantee this time that the chipmunk was alive as it fell, but it definitely was not when it was returned to the platform after a short search by the camera, where Big Red is feeding a chipmunk to the M's during a long feeding session.

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since 2012. They have made use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, and 2018–2021 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.
