Do you need studio monitors to produce? This is a great question and can be answered in many different ways. We’ll start off by tackling four other questions. What are studio monitors? Can people mix without them? Will they benefit your situation? What do I recommend for beginners?
Well first of all, studio monitors are speakers that are tailored towards mixing and mastering. What makes them different from other speakers is that they are engineered to give you the purest sound possible.
People can definitely mix without them. When it comes to mixing, the most important thing is that you understand the concepts more than the equipment.
Do a little bit of self assessment. How familiar are you with mixing and mastering? Are you a beginner or do you have an idea of what you’re doing? Are you really tight on budget right now? If you’re just starting off and know literally nothing (and I mean nothing) about mixing and mastering, then just focus on learning some of that stuff first.
I recommend you upgrade your gear to studio gear when you can. It doesn’t have to be right away, but sooner is better than later. Start in parts too. If you already have headphones, but don’t have speakers then get some speakers! You can upgrade your headphones when you deem it necessary.
